Weather - Overcast Skies
Water Temperature - 45-49 degrees
Technique - Freelined and lightlined planers
Bait - 7-10 inch gizzards
Water Clarity - I would call it almost muddy with very little visibility.
With about 15 baits left over from Saturday, I decided see what the prestorm bite might be like.
I didn't begin fishing until 7:30 this morning. When I arrived at my first stop, I reached for my phone to plug it in and realized I had left it at the house. I set out four boards bankside and two more on the channel side. About 200 yds. into my first pull, I had the board closest to the bank get chased. I just knew this would end in a hookup. At one point, the bait was nearly climbing out of the water. As I stood there ready to set the hook, the inside board got destroyed. No hook set necessary. I was by myself, and as I was fighting this fish, the outside board finally went down. Before I could get to it, that fish came unbuttoned. I did land the first fish. A nice 33 inch fish that weighed just under 17 pounds.
I got reset, and went back through same area. The activity was there, a few more chases but no hookup. I gave up after a few more loops and moved on.
I headed up river just a bit and saw some activity. I set things out but got no action.
Running low on baits, I decided to head back to a spot that I caught a fish late on Saturday. I had six baits left. I put out a spread of four boards and had immediate action. I landed a 28-inch fish pretty quickly, made a large loop and while doing so, hooked up with a 6-pound largemouth. Reloaded and went back through the first spot and immediately got a 34-inch fish. Like my buddy JohnK says, it hit like a freight train. Now down to my last three baits, all in the water, I made my way up the another bank. The bankside board got blasted but no hookup and no bait. I ended up with one more fish, a 26-incher that hit a 10- inch bait.
The bite was excellent this morning with constant activity.
