Weather - Partly cloudy, air temperatures ranging from upper 30s to upper 50s Water Temperatures - 45-49 degrees, water was clear in areas below the bridge and outright muddy above the bridge. Technique - Freelined and lightlined planers. Bait - 6-11 inch gizzards I got to the lake on Friday afternoon with the intention of catching bait and heading over to hear Dan Wilson, fish biologist, at the Smith Mountain Striper Club. The weatherman had a different idea. I had a little break in the rain about 6pm but it was short and I just didn't have it in me fight the cold rain. I ended up with no bait and I missed the Striper Club meeting. We started our day about 6 am. on Satirday. Fortunately, bait was pretty easy and we will filled up in about 45 minutes with a good variety. We began fishing about 7:15. It was a beautiful morning and that's about the best thing I can say about our morning session. We fished until noon and never got a bite or chase. We didn't mark many fish. After a brief break to watch my Wahoos beat up on Pittsburgh, I headed back out for a couple of hours to fish until dark. From the time I dropped off plane, I was immediately on fish. Bait was chased before I got my spread out. I came upon a deep rock wall and had two blowups on two different baits but no hookup. I made three more loops through the area, each time getting a chase or another blowup. As the sun was setting and on my fourth trip through, I finally took the skunk off the boat. [/IMG] 30 inches, 14 pounds. Although it was a tough day, I felt pretty good about finishing the day with a small win.
