The 2018 Striper Mafia Winter Open, sponsored by Magnum Point Marina, was held on Saturday December 8th on Smith Mountain Lake. This was the second event in the 2018/19 Striper Mafia Tournament series, presented by Humminbird & Minn Kota Motors. 43 teams and approximate 115 angler, including 10 youth anglers and 6 lady anglers. Anglers competed for $5,375 in prize money plus many nice prizes that were awarded at the post-tournament check-in at Hot Shots of SML.
32 of 43 teams turned in entries, with multiple Virginia Angler Recognition citations (fish 37" or larger) being caught in this catch-photo-release format tournament. The big fish of the tournament went to Team Topwater Rushers - Keith Mattson of Moneta, VA & Brett Babb of Walkertown, NC with a 39.5" striped bass. Lady Angler, Stacy Bolt of Roanoke, VA moved into 1st place in the series-long Ladies Competition with a 39" fish.
In the Youth Category, Kaylee of Team PrimeTime, from Roanoke VA took 1st place with a 36" fish. Lincoln from Team ReelMen, from Deep Gap, NC was in 2nd with a 35.25" fish, Finn of Team Pontus of Raleigh, NC was 3rd with a 33.75" striper.
In the overall competition, Team Squidhound of Hardy, VA - Matthew & Norman Hinnman an David Farley took 1st place & $1,900 with a 2-fish combined total of 74.25". Team Livebait JunkEE, Kurt Hammerschmidt of Montpelier, VA placed 2nd and won $850 with 69.5". Team Primetime, consisting of Harley & Kaylee Cox of Roanoke, VA took 3rd place and $500 with 69.25". 4th Place was secured by Team Bolt Fin-Aticis - Chris & Stacy Bolt of Roanoke, VA and Rusty Bolt of North Carolina taking home $350 via a total of 69". Finally Team Avenger, with Clint and Carey Gray of Glade Hill, VA placed 5th, winning $350 with a total of 68.5". 5 non-placing teams won their $100 entry fees back via raffle.
Anglers collected 145 new, un-wrapped toys to donate to the Lake Christian Ministries collection for families in need this Christmas Season. Sea Tow of Smith Mountain Lake assisted with the collection logistics. Anglers turning in toys were entered in a raffle for a set of custom stainless removable rod holders from Scruggs Stainless & Aluminum Works and a $100 gift card from Magnum Point Marina.
