It looks like shimano has come out with a dfferent tekota. Anyone know anything about the new reels and whether or not the old ones can be purchased.

Looks like you can still get the "old" ones at plenty of places - the new ones (Tekota-A's) are more of a "lower profile" style..... will be interesting to see the reports on reliability, build quality, drag, etc...
