I have tried them a couple of times only picking up one fish. I still think it’s to early for them but I tried them for the very reason you mentioned. Another month and all I will fish with is U rigs.

Why U rigs when the water gets colder?

If you want to fish and getting bait is very hard it's an easy choice....

How fast are you trolling the U-Rigs in winter? I know the standard is usually 2.5 mph when pulling the rigs but wondering if you slow it down at all with the water temps being so cold?

All I know is when I think about pulling a U-Rig I just go ahead and throw a $20 bill in the lake - cause its just quicker and less hassle than waiting till I hang the rig in a tree 5 min after getting it out there

2.5 is a good speed until you start your turn then it's more 4. As far as the weedless hooks the arms on the umbrella and lines down from the arms can catch in the trees. The same goes for the three way rigs... if you try it and it works let us know...

I've used them a couple of times. So far no hang ups (but no fish either). You have to pay attention to the poles. I've notice when they bounce, you've probably hit a tree and you've also probably released one or more of the weedless rigs. Pull the line up and inspect it and reset any as needed.

Here is my take on u-rigs. Don't waste time or money getting hung up pulling aimlessly up and down the lake hoping to hook up on a fish. Approach fishing with them like you are looking for fish to drop bait or jig on. As the water gets colder, the fish will start slowing down and schooling back up....The first thing, is to look till you find the fish. Mark where they are, say 45 ft., drive past them, turn around, stop and drop you u-rigs straight down 45 ft. Put the rods ( I only use 2 u-rigs ) in your bow rod holders. Using your trolling motor, pull 1-1.5 mph. This does 3 things. It brings your u-rigs back up to just above the fish, slows your pull down in cold water and most importantly, your u-rigs will stay in the cone angle of you graph. You can see the trees and your u-rigs and know when to speed up to dodge them..... If you put it in front of them, they will eat it. One of my most productive days with u-rigs came in February.....

That's a really cool tip. Going to have to try that this winter. Thanks!

I can attest that pulling urigs with your trolling motor works. Dropped one down over a school this summer, 4 to the boat and a couple of busted leaders. Probably had 6 or 7 fish hit the 9 baits. Saw it all on the screen too!
