Spent the weekend at the lake with old....and getting older...high school buddies. Last year on this trip we absolutely killed them with a banner day....so expectations ( theirs) were really high.
Sat. was kind of a bust after staying up WAY too late Fri night telling the same stories we've been telling for 45 years, but whats better then that? I was incapable of finding any big bait...but didn't really look that hard and went out with a tank full of peanuts and a few big ales. Made a major mistake when Cohesion came by and offered us big shad and I declined....I was foolishly certain I would find my own. I would regret that decision for the next 48 hours ( Thanks for your gracious offer Chris!...wish you told me how stupid I was being).....
Sun. AM I threw that damn net more times and places I could count....peanuts...peanuts...peanuts. I had 2 decent shad and reluctantly put them out in the mid afternoon when I realized the wind wasn't going to die down as promised. Caught a nice 34'' on a weighted float and had a big blowup on the other guy...so I knew they wanted to eat but I couldn't give 'em what they wanted. At least the skunk was gone.
Monday AM up at dawn, throwing in slightly icy conditions...and I do not like that... despite using the Gator method of beach towel on the deck. Everything warmed up pretty quick and finally found 5 good baits...just 5.
Water temps had reached 66 in our chosen creek and we put out a spread...sparingly offering a few good sized baits. Had some nice interest right away with swirls and chases...each one making me agonize about the condition of those precious baits. The bank size board got swirled on and the bait came flying out of the water....I grabbed the rod in classic hospitable host fashion and crossed her eyes. First citation of the season at 37.75'... We, of course, acted like we had just won the $1.7 Billion Mega Millions.....much whooping and back slapping.
The remaining good baits were all chased and smacked around, with the last one eaten by a big green fish ( 5+lbs)...since the guy that caught him is a largemouth guy from Fla., he was pretty happy. I acted happy too.
My regular partner is laid up with a bum ( but getting better ) knee...so I was kinda disappointed he wasn't with us. Then again, if he was I would have never gotten that rod in my hands......Lund2 will begrudgingly post a couple pics.
