Water Temps Ranging from 77 on Thursday to 71 on Sunday. Storm came in Thursday afternoon and dumped enough rain in the lake to raise it by a few ft. almost to the point where i couldnt get my boat out.
pulled 6 rods, 3 bankside boards, two channel side boards and one float.
Pulled the largest gizzard shad that I could find.......Long story short.....my boat stinks. 4 day skunk. I had a few chases, but no stripers could stomach my 10" shad.
I get ACL surgery this Thursday and i'm really disappointed that i didn't get the chance to do some true fall time fishing. This upcoming weekend should be good tho.
Tight Lines.

Hope you enjoyed the time on the water and the view. Been trying to get a time to go, but life is making it hard. Good luck on your surgery. Both of my sons had it not long ago due to sports injuries. First couple of days of rehab is critical but both have had great results. These docs have gotten very good at it so you should do well.

I wanted to go but couldn't get nobody to ride also didn't know what the lake would be like so stayed home, good luck with the surgery, a day on the water is always good just better when the fish act right.

In my opinion, the only better thing I can do on SML than pull large gizzards and catch nothing is to pull large gizzards and catch something. Not pulling large gizzards would mean I got skunked.

Yam, lund1 and I could not agree more.....and if there was one thing we did well this weekend it was catch large gizzards. Absolute net fulls of them. there were a few times (or more than a few times), where we weren't catching fish and we blamed it on our bait not being 100% fresh....so we dumped it all out, refilled with clean crisp water and caught 25 more 10"+ baits. That was almost as fun as catching a striper. thanks all for good luck. all will be fine, just a little inconvenient .

Where abouts on the lake are you guys catching the big gizzards? Jake Hey Jake, before you ask where my bait hole is why don't give us a little intro? who you are and where your from, where abouts on the lake you fish. We are a pretty tight nit community on here and we love SML and other quality fisheries. jumping the gun with questions like that may make some guys may think your just here for our bait.....

I am new to SML, I am from Statesville NC and me and some buddies are coming up the weekend of Thanksgiving and going to try SM. We generally fish in SC on Hartwell, Thurmond and Murray. We are tired of pulling around baits that are constantly stolen by small hybrids. We generally live bait fish but have pulled some Alabama rigs to try and convince one to bite. I have been throwing a cast net since I was a kid and generally can find bait anywhere on a lake after a few hours (especially at night). I was just looking to save some time looking for larger bait. I would never ask for you to give up any information you do not want someone you do not even know to have. I apologize for the forward question...

No harm no foul man... glad to have you checking out SML.
didnt mean to be harsh, i've just heard some talk recently of folks from other states coming over to SML, catching a few hundred big shad and driving them back to TN to use/sell. that does not sit kindly with me. i saw you joined the forum a few hours ago, and your first and only question/post was where are you catching large shad.
my best advice is get good at reading your electronics- know the difference between small bait and large bait by just driving past and really it takes time. focus on creeks.
have you been up to sml fishing recently? if so, what kind of rig are you fishing from?

We have never fished on SML, this is really the first mountain or deep river lake we have fished for stripers. We fish out of a white Sea Hunt BX22 (Fish Whistle). Not sure if you know or have heard of Jeff Tomlin who makes the Waterbugz planer boards but he is a childhood friend of mine and we still live in the same small town and still talk shop on a regular basis. We have a filtered bait tank on the boat but also use an original (early 92-93' maybe) super bait tank made by Ron himself. We have a local lake here full of big gizzards and we keep a couple dozen in a 150 gallon take during most of the winter months just so we can always have some larger baits. we all work more than anything else but we are weekend warriors who love to see a planer board go ripping away from the boat!!
