Coming off a good night the last trip, and with water temps rising, we had high hopes for abundant alewife activity and busting. Foolish us. We managed 3 total in the 16-24 inch range. We were out between 8 PM and midnight, and were prepared to stay longer. We stayed in the mid Roanoke area and things were just very quiet. Except for that Tuesday night boat race to Captains Quarters between 9:30 and 10:00. Holy cow.

I know what you mean choochoo. Can't wait for the ales to start spawning. Should be any time now.

Thanks for the report, choochoo. I've been watching your posts closely on night time stripers. Seems like you had some pretty decent nights. My other 4 friends and I are coming down from central PA May 11-18th for our annual trip to SML. We stay at a cabin at the state park and mostly fish the S-Curves. I can only hope that the ales start spawning and the stripers are hungry. Tight lines!!

10-4 on the ales. Went up Friday night, put in at state park around 8:45 as dusk turned to night. Headed toward Witcher, fishing from there back across every point in Craddock -- tossing the standard plugs. Ales were flipping everywhere. At one point in the night, I was cruising wide open on my toon (17mph), and suddenly yanked back throttle as water looked weird in the bow light reflection. We were in ~35' of water adjacent to a point, and the alewives were literally skipping on the top by the thousands -- almost looked like a miniaturized version of the videos you see of the jumping river carp. We eased up toward point, and boom, boom, boom picked up three ~10lb schoolies, including my 7yr old son's first striper. The only carches of the night. Saw numerous blow ups in front of lights, where more ales were flipping. Next weekend is going to be prime, IMHO.
