I have a 125hp Mercury Saltwater on my boat. Today I figured I'd start it up since it hasn't run since November. First the battery was dead since I left the battery switch on and the carbon monoxide detector drained it. I charged it up but the motor still wouldn't start. Is it OK to use starter fluid in an outboard? Is there anything I can do to help it start in cold weather?

Is it 2 stroke? if so I wouldn't use starting fluid as you wont be inducing oil. Try making a premix in a small gas can and pore a LITTLE into the carbs. might take a couple of times to get it going. Also check to make sure your fuel line or primer bulb hasn't cracked in the cold which would allow air to get in. Had that problem on my old boat.

I hate the term won't start....will it not crank or not run? If it won't crank check if the engine will turn by hand if it will not you have mechanical problems if it will turn by hand do a voltage drop test on the starter circuit.
If it will not run test for spark if good then put some premix in an old spray bottle and give it a few squirts and see if it will run for second. If it will you have fuel problems and if it is carburated you need to take the carb apart and clean.

I got it started OK once the battery charged up good but it did take a good bit of cranking. I had recently put some Stabil in the tank and just wanted to get it into the engine, too. I may need to get it tuned up this Spring. Anyone know a good mechanic?
