Wow what a day. We went from the outhouse to the penthouse in the last 20 minutes of the tournament. The tournament for us really started early Friday morning as we went to catch bait and pre fish some. Bait was fairly easy. We put out a full spread and fished for several hours without a bite. I was definitely worried about how tough the fishing could be on tournament day. As we finished up for the day and prepared to go to check in we ran across a couple from North Carolina who were looking for bait. We were done so I gave them almost everything we had left and threw the rest back in the lake. A few hours later the bait hunt was on again. Only this time I couldn't find it. Threw the net for 6 or so hours to put a little over 20 bait in the tank. We had our few bait in the water just after lines in and had one on about an hour later, after a short fight the fish pulled off and I retrieved an empty hook. We finally got one to the boat about 10:30 a decent fish at 31.5". We fished right up until almost time to check in with no other hook ups. Then with less than 20 minutes left one of the boards got hammered the fish fought like a big one but ended up being 32.5".
We were pleased to have gotten 2 fish but was fairly sure that wouldn't be good enough to place. We were wrong. Turns out the fishing was tough for most folks and our 64" worth of fish was good enough to win. We were very blessed to be able to land two fish. There were several teams that didn't. Lots of these guys are the same ones that helped me get started bait fishing and some of the best striper fishermen I know of. It is truly an honor to know and get to fish against such great competition.
We had an unforgettable day winning the tournament, team of the year, big fish of the year, and 1st and 2nd in the youth division. But the best thing about the whole thing is getting to share the experience with my dad and my boys. I am blessed beyond compare.
I would like to thank the Striper Mafia for hosting another great season! It's a privilege to get to compete in the tournaments you host.
I couldn't have done any of this without my great friend and fishing buddy PrimeTime. I am really lucky to have a friend who shares my passion for striper fishing. Thanks Harley!
