Greetings. Lifelong VA resident with plenty of years cutting my teeth fishing the middle James for smallies, hitting ponds for largemouths and got pretty good hititing lower James for Big Blues. I'll fish anywhere but would rather be catching. Basically an expert at catching fish that are easy to catch. I have learned a lot from other forums and since we will be at the lake more often(relatives), figured I'd try to pick some more stuff up. Spent plenty of weekends at SML over last 15 years running around on a boat but not usually for any length and have enjoyed the challenge of patterning large impoundments, not my forte. Donated plenty of time and tackle to the deep wood as I try to figure out some patterns for stripers. I am enjoying the tips I have picked up here so far as a guest and the experience and insights help. Hope to do quite a bit more fishing this spring both for largemouth and stripers as my boat has a pretty flexible setup. So far I am only an expert at SML at putting the kids on some green sunfish in dead of summer and lucking into some photo worthy catches. Striper efforts have been hampered by finding bait(pretty shallow dock and instead of throw nets we use gill nets that work wonders on the lower james for gizzards...cheating I know). Not much of a tournaments fisherman and trying not to hire guides just yet, but I'm learning. I hope to figure out more by continuing to read. So thanks in advance. Home base when down is near R12. So running to Blackwater and here and there. Looking to explore upper lake more as well. Questions I will research more: Bait tips(read a lot already) for Alewifes or Gizzards. Dead summer LM patterns besides deep docks. Any thoughts on Flathead patterns uplake or what to target downlake for channels? I usually throw jigs and soft plastic or fish for cats with cut bait, so swim baits, crankbaits, dropshotting and live bait tactics have been fun to learn(screw up). Tight lines.

Thanks for the "warm" welcome. Must admit that is about all that is warm out there. Might have to cave in on the new Year's day tradition of catching a fish. Brrr. I'm tough...but I'm not crazy.

Ice finally thinned enough and had the day off so got the yak out to go out after first fish of 2018. Hit my wintertime honeyhole nearby up here in CVA where I live...and as predicted...it was cold there too. Managed 3 bites(maybe more...hands were pretty stiff) in an hour and a half or so and landed 2. So 2018 has officially started even if it was 2 weeks late. Few of the deeper spots still were iced over. So stayed on the sunny side of my spot fishing SLOW...and then slowed down even more. Just me and a kingfisher at today.

Nice! I don't have the self discipline to fish slow enough to catch LM Bass in these weather conditions.

In this cold I used to just go to the lower James for Blues and reel the monster cats in to get my fix ...in between naps. But the commercial guys have pretty well ended that it seems.

Catching cats on the James is the next 'trip' on my list, but weather and personal reasons have held that off for now. Hope to go in the next couple of weeks.

Yeah...for sure still big cats around down there. But I'm selfish and think like a rec fisherman. I used to be able to put in and get on some big fish with some effort. My last couple trips saw commercial guys go by in a 20+ Carolina Skiff literally full...and by full I mean with only 2-3 inches of freeboard left stick out...of cats of all sizes. Their holding bins and every square inch of the boat was loaded. Can't imagine the weight. Saw quite a few monsters mixed in despite limit of 2. I feel for commercial folks trying to make a living...just not a huge fan of VMRC and how they do "business." Fishing like that day after day takes its toll. Yes the biomass of Blues is out of whack and the science backs thinning them out...since they are invasive(technically so are smallmouth, largemouth and stripers in most areas). But there is a consumption advisory on blues which seems odd to then allow the sale...and the blues are being blamed for blue crab decline(never mind over harvest, loss of grass, pollution, winter time dredging for females in VA until a few years ago, and huge population explosion around the bay). Man...how'd I get so off track? I digress...I got a small boat so have to steer clear of lots of the bigger open water(better spots) when it gets windy and seems like lots of the places I used to hit are being pounded by hoop nets, gill nets and I think even electrofishing. Feel for some of the guides to. I drop $ when I go between gas, trips to green top, food...etc. Guess none of that matters. I've just seen chnges...some of that is them coming back into balance, some not. I just like reeling in 50+lb fish.
