Usually I’d say 2 smaller over 1 bigger but check the resolution - or specifally the pixel density specs On the 5” units. On the HDS they were always a low-end screen with poor resolution / pixel density and also not as bright of a screen. That may have changed now.
But two screens often gives you better options - run full sidescan on one and then sonar/chart on the other - and get more screen real-estate for each - and more importantly more horizontal pixels for sidescan and more vertical pixels for sonar

Two 9s.
I’d rather have two of any size screen than one of a mid size screen.

One 9” and then Bluetooth it to an iPad and your phone. I hane a 7” on my console and I put my iPad on a mount facing the front of the boat. Works great

I would go w/ the single, bigger screen. You'll have better resolution, visibility. Any 9" unit will give you a split screen option if you need different views.

Also buy as big of a unit as you can afford. I bought a 7 and a year later would like a bigger unit. Lol

About the IPad thing.. can you run a different screen on the tablet than the fish finder. In other words, can i see side scan on the tablet and gps/sonar on the fish finder ?

I don’t think so. It just mirrors the lowrance unit. You can control the Fish finder with the iPad. I loaded navionics app on my iPad so I can have it on separate my lowrance unit if need be.

Also - isn’t wifi only an HDS thing - not a feature on the Elite models?

Is an internet connection needed to do what you are doing? or is strictly bluetooth enough? I have a tablet but do not have internet and wondering if I can mirror my HDS 7 gen3?

I do not use internet. My iPad is not hooked up to a data plan. I just click on the app on my iPad and it finds my elite 7ti. I am pretty sure you can do the same with the HDS. There are a couple YouTube vids that explain it.
