Anyone on here making a bay trip this year? Looks like the big ones are starting to show up.

I have never been but am itching to go. Everyone says the fishing is not as good as past years but I can't resist the idea of a 30 or 40 lb striper.

Went last year and had a blast. Not sure if the person I went with is going. He's still thinking so I'll wait on that. It's alot better to definitely have a few people

Do these fish come in close to kiptopeke area or do you have to go in the ocean to get them? Or both?

They do come in close to kiptopeke , Cape Charles , and up north some from these areas in the bay this time of the year. They tend to push out of the bay once the water temps get down around 42 degrees.

We’ve been on the other side of the bay having a blast light tackle jigging. With 3 of us we are in the triple digits every time. Now these are schoolies but a blast to catch. Biggest so far has been a 30 incher. Typically kiptopeake to harborton is a good stretch. Water temp our last time out was 52. Hoping this cold snap will get them fired up. Good luck if you head out.

I am hoping to go the 17th for a few days if the weather cooperates. That's a lot of water to look for a fish in but you can't catch em if you don't have a line wet!
Triple digit fish is fun no matter what size they are.

Yeah it is fun. If you looking for that big girl then eeling is the way but we always have light tackle stuff with us. Just look for the gulls and pelicans and go have some fun. And we have been on the west side of the bay.

What do you consider "light tackle"?

For those of you who eel is 50 lb leader and 8/0 circle hooks a typical set up?
Do you guys run weighted lines or free lines or both?

I've not been in about 5 years, but we would run 50 lb leader and 30 lb main-line with 8/0 (or maybe bigger) hooks - circle or Octopus/J is your preference. and yes, we'd run free-lines & weighted lines to see what the fish wanted.....

1/2 oz to 2 oz. flukes, stingsilvers, swimbaits and topwater. Thrown on 7 ft med heavy tackle with 15# test. If we are catching a ton of small ones up top we increase the weight to try the bottom.
