WT: 72-75
AT: high 50's rising to 78 by midday
Conditions: Overcast most of Saturday, clearing up towards evening. Sunday: very foggy and overcast morning.
Got up to the lake Friday night after an excruciatingly long week. Loaded the boat and immediately started doing the bait dance on the bow of the boat. quickly realized my bait hole that has been a 1 and done the past few weeks was vacant. went and found a light that was producing about 4-6 good Gizzard and a few ales every throw. After about 4-5 throws, someone shut the light off......thanks for the help bud. looked at a few different lights and none were holding bait worth catching.
so i had a decent tank of bait for the morning.
10/14: went downriver in the morning, nothing. caught some more bait for the evening/next morning. Fished the evening upriver...and around 7 opted to go back to the house with my buddies and drown our sorrows in booze and frozen food. the skunk smelt bad.
10/15: up well before first light.....and there was FOG LIKE I HAVE NEVER SEEN. coming out of my cove at idle speed i couldn't even see a single channel marker. thought i was going to have to go back in for a bit. but decided to continue to idle out of my cove and it lightened up just enough to see channel markers and other boat lights. got to our spot just as first light started and there were fish everywhere. periodic breaking fish, marking pods of 6-12 fish at a time coming up to look at my bait, but nothing would commit. I was noticing that there were large pods of juvenile Ale's all over where i was fishing, and the stripers seemed to be so keyed in on that bait that they would not touch my gorgeous offering of dollar bills to Mongos. I even through a spoon to a few breaking fish with no love, all i could feel was my spoon tapping the tiny Ale's that i was casting into (i assume it was tapping baitfish). finally had a 30" striper commit to a small bill on the float to get the skunk off the boat.
I'll be up again this weekend....this time with a full buffet of bait. from ale's, bills, mongos's, and hell maybe even a few pork rinds or canned sardines.
