I used to fish the Roanoke River for trout many years ago, never fished it for smallmouth. Yesterday a friend of mine and I went to visit another fishing buddy who's recovering in Roanoke Memorial hospital. We parked in the garage and walked across the pedestrian bridge, we both commented on how clean and clear the water was in the river. After a short visit with our friend, his lunch arrived along with his wife so we headed back out. We stopped on the bridge and looked over the rail at the water below, there was a guy fishing from the bank right below us. He said he had caught a few fish throwing a nightcrawler and letting it drift in the current. Moving across the bridge a little farther we stopped and looked again, fish were swimming everywhere, smallmouth, pearch, carp, and even a snake. We then moved to the other side to take a look. Same thing on this side, fish swimming all over the place. Then BAM ... we saw her. A huge smallmouth, just laying there behind a chunk of concrete, moving out every few seconds to take a look around. It was neat to watch this fish, which might go 4 lbs., in it's environment and see how it acted.

I actually kayak the Roanoke from the River Rock restaurant in Salem to Wasena quite often. Once you get past the 419 bridge before LewisGale the fishing actually gets pretty good because theres not really any public access points like there is in Salem along Riverside Dr. I've landed quite a few nice smallmouths on that stretch. Some going 2-3 lbs. It's definitely an underrated section of river, but I'm ok with it staying that way
