My family and I decided that another fishing trip was in order and that they would join me the ladder part of the trip. My 5 year old son started kindergarten today and all he kept saying to his mom was that he wanted to catch a cobia!
Day 1 - I had to setup camp but was able to get in some fishing alone and ended up with my personal best at 56 inches and 47 pounds.
Day 2 - I got some early morning fishing in before LBJ joined me for the afternoon. And as shown, I hooked into another one but he won that battle and took my pole!
Then LBJ came and we were able to catch one more keeper and a bunch of smaller ones.
Day 3 - LBJ decided to stay the night at a rather shady motel while I enjoyed my breezy campsite on the water. This day was loaded with great fish and 4 foot waves. We had 2 on at a time at one point and enjoyed watching cobia chase our bait in the waves.
After a rather wet ride home, we cleaned our fish and my family met me at the ramp for an evening run. However, I did not take them out on the Bay because I was scared. Thus, I took my son to catch croakers but he was not really interested in anything but cobia.
Day 4 - We got a really late start and were not able to catch bait so we decided to cruise the river instead and ate some really good seafood. All day long while enjoying the views, my son kept turning on the front fish finder asking if the stuff on the screen were cobia. We did catch some fish that day but nothing that satisfied my son's desire to catch cobia.
Day 5 - We woke up at 4 am and my son told me immediately after wiping his eyes that it was time to get up and catch bait. It warmed my soul. So we did...and boy did he love that.
We then headed for the fishing grounds with a decent but manageable chop. As we arrived, we saw some birds working so we decided to do some casting. My son made me very proud as he swung a 7.5 foot pole with a spinning reel and casted spoons a good 30 yards. It was amazing! We were catching blues every cast until old man sea got the best of my wife and son.
After fishing for a bit, it was evident that they were not getting better. Thus, I took them to land. However, after a few few hours, they decided to come back out and give it one more shot. TROOPERS!
After setting out chum and my poles, we were rewarded with the screaming sound of a Tekota. A cobia was on! My kid and wife jumped up as I was reeling it in. However, it came unbuttoned. But then as I was bringing in the line, we noticed a massive cobia chasing my bait back to the boat. I stopped reeling and the cobia took the bait again for a long run. My kid was ecstatic! But Daddy screwed up. With the rod in my hand my natural instinct was to set the hook! But this was a circle. Bye bye cobia! And that was it! My son got sick again 20 minutes later and we were gone.
We'll get em next time Afton Fisher May! Enjoy your first day of kindergarten!
