I headed out at dawn in search of crappies, just me and the dog this time. I hit a milk run of familiar docks and brushpiles first off, with little to show for my efforts. A few here and there, but no big concentrations that I've come to expect in these areas. Upon closer inspection with a camera in some of these areas, the crappies were plentiful but they were scattered and cruising all around the structure. Also plentiful were carp and aggressive bluegills, both of which I think hurt crappie fishing.
So instead of wearing out more of my regular spots, I changed creeks and started scanning. I ended up finding a couple good groups off the end of docks and between docks that turned out fair numbers but no size.
In total, between 20 and 30 were boated and released by 10am, but only one was over 10". There's no telling how many I missed because the hits were so light. I actually swapped out a mono reel for a braid reel so I could feel them better, which helped.
I tried a new color today, "mayfly". It was good, but it was still no blue ice.

Good report, I fished Martinsville reservoir this morning, caught 30 plus crappie, bout like you though all small fish, nothing over 8". I have a hard time catching bigger fish this time of year. Seems like they just disappear. Also fished SML last tuesday with similar results, miss that spring bite.... I love that Blue Ice also, but this year my go to was BG Electric Chicken(glow in the dark)
