Got on the Lake right at daylight and went on a bait hunt. For only my second attempt at catching bait I was pleased with the results. Struggled to find anything for awhile, then I found that I wasn't shallow enough. Its a very good feeling to haul in a load of bait for the first time! Had mostly what I assume were dollar bills, and a couple a little smaller. Got the planer boards out at about 9am. Fished till about 3pm without so much as a swirl anywhere from State Park to Indian Point. Guess I just don't have the touch of this live bait thing yet! Since I don't have a REAL bait tank yet my baits that were left were looking quite stressed so I freed them and went for more bait. Found some more dollar bills a little deeper than they were earlier, And one nice 11'' shad. Started pulling again with my biggest bait closest to the bank. Just as I was coming past a dock I got a swirl, about 10 seconds later I turned my head to check the heading of the boat (which was all over the place with the gusting wind) and heard zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Man I was pumped! It just wasn't pulling like a striper and I soon found out why. Oh well it was a nice LM! Took a break. Went back out at about 8:30pm and casted F18s until Midnight with no luck. Went home.

nice job on the bait and it really does feel good to pull up that net with a load of shad. It will all come together soon. Sounds like you are using the advice given and putting in the time.

Thats really good work on the bait for your first time. I can honestly say, I think i gain more satisfaction from pulling up a netfull of Mongos (which i have only done maybe 2 times in my life) than catching most stripers. Dont get me wrong, when you get a pig on the end of the hook screaming drag out...thats a whole different story.

Nice report. Sometimes catching bait is almost as enjoyable as catching stripers. I find myself not wanting to stop and fish sometimes (just one more throw). Hopefully one day I will be able to catch nets full of mongos like bentrod, mward , yam and many others. We all have to go thru the learning process although it may be slow sometimes.

Dude, you aced the hard part! Nice report. Live baiting is fun ain't it!
You asked if I were at Indian yesterday -- I was further up river.
There have been more than a few days I boated green bait stealers and no stripes.
