I was in smith mountain boats over the weekend getting a circuit breaker for my trolling motor and struck up a conversation with a gentleman that was rigging his striper boat. Super nice guy. I told him I was just getting started striper fishing. His first question was do I have a VHF radio. I told him I did not and he recommended I get one. What is a good one that won't break the bank just to chat on the water? Do you guys use them while fishing? He was very nice and told me to be sure to holler for him when I am out on the water.

My opinion - had one on my last boat and never used it. did not get one on the new boat and never wish for one. If I was fishing the coast some I would probably have one though.
If I was to get one to use at SML it would be a smaller handheld model for emergency backup type of thing. Cell phone have pretty much replaced the radios.

That's kinda of what I had read as well. It was just the first thing he asked me when I told him I was new to striper fishing.

+1 on cel phone. You have the added benefit of being able to send data w/ your cel phone. No VHF radio will do that for you.
That said, I do keep a tone alert radio on board during weird weather periods. It's a receiver. No transmit capability.

About the only reason that I can think of for having a VHF on the lake anymore is the DSC feature. Flip a guard, push a button and the Coast Guard is instantly notified that you are in trouble, it gives your exact location, plus your boat description and name is on file.

IF you've connected your VHF to your GPS and the GPS is working - or if you have a VHF radio model with built-in GPS And assuming you're abl to get signal to the CG-Aux station tower on the Roanoke - given the terrain around the lake this is not a guarantee
