Headed up to the lake Friday evening after getting off work around 5pm with Lund3 (my little brother) and one other buddy coming from Charlotte. Got to the lake by 8pm and loaded the boat up and was out on the water to catch bait by 9pm. By 10-10:30 I had all the gizzards I could ask for. 3-4 that were 12"+ with one being freakishly huge and the rest between 8-11".
On the water by 6:15 Saturday morning and headed for some creeks. Lines in the water by about 6:45am or whatever first light was. Within the first 15mon we had a fish absolutely slam a channel side board with a 10" gizzard that was hooked on the only circle hook on the boat out of 6 rods. My buddy from Charlotte was the first to the rod and cranked the reel twice and the fish was on. But then he proceeded to take the rod out I of the holder and set the hook (at which I yelled "NO NO NO!" ) but the fish stayed on. The fish put on a good fight and kept maki g long runs the second it caught sight of the boat. The 4th time we got this fish within 10ft of the boat the hook pulled and I watched it swim away and I again explained to my buddy that you don't set circle hooks when a fish hits. That fish looked around 35-36"
Lund3 Boated one more 28" fish about 20min later then I boated another 31" fish about 30min after that, all in the same stretch of water.
Decided to pull the opposite side bank and that's were we hit it. This fish absolutely slammed a bank side board and the drag went screaming, and low and behold my buddy from Charlotte (who isn't a fisherman) was first to the rod. After what felt like a 30min fight my buddy finally tired her out enough to get her to the boat.
We decided on 38.5" and the bogas weighted 22.5lbs. Biggest fish ever caught on our boat
Our tape measure was torn off at 34" and Lund3 quickly grabbed a knife on the console and measured off 6" on it to add to our tape measure and this fish was just short of the additional 6" so I think 38.5" may have been selling this fish a little short, But I'm not one to tell fish stories.
There goes the first citation of the season for the Lund boys. Keep em coming. (Even though my buddy reeled it in, i did all the leg work. Hey Mward, I may need a few pointers on that shouldering technique you keep talking about to keep my non-fisherman buddys from grabbing the rods when the big ones hit)
Fished hard for the rest of the day with no luck, but didn't care.
Fished the same stretch of water on Saturday with only one 30" fish to show for it.
