My wife, daughter and myself are lookin to come visit SML. We are looking for recommendation on a cabin or condo or house that you would recommend for us to rent for a weekend. We would like to be close to the Captains Quarters Bait shop.
We also like to striper fish, so any insight in fishing would be great as well. We like to live bait and jig.
Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

Welcome! When are you coming? Captains Quarters is closed for the season will open mid-March. Most house-rentals are on the Bedford county side of the lake and there are a number of places in that general area. You might check out the Inn at Halesford Harbor as well - nice rooms several of which have stoves / fridge / microwaves and they have one "resort cabin" - sort of a "tiny house". google Smith Mountain Lake rentals and/or check on places like VRBO.com Lots of info on here about striper fishing you can learn a lot from the reports & and tutorial sections

Thanks, I am looking to coming in March. I was also considering bring my bait from out local lake. Is bait hard to find this time of the year?

Bait should be easy enough in March.

Not trying to start something - legitimately curious...wouldn't that be against the law?

I remembered seeing this in a recent report so I was just curious. Maybe this only if you dump the bait?

I asked DGIF this question a few years back. Here is their response..
The only bait fish that you cannot bring into this Commonwealth are Cray Fish. With other bait fish you are allowed to transport live bait fish into to Virginia, but you need to remember to follow Virginia’s regulations regarding bait fish. Also when you are done fishing you cannot release the bait fish into the waterways. If you have any other questions or need me to clarify please let me know.

Humm..... 29.1-543.1 say only...... I looked up the same thing after I saw the picture of the sign. If it were illegal I'd be in violation every time I made the 3 hour drive to the lake. I know for some it's easier to catch bait at the lake, but for me I usually bring at least 2 days worth of bait with me. The bait left over goes back home with me in the home tank.
