Hey all you bait gurus Ive got a quick question about salt in my bait tank. So i know that some salt in your tank helps but my question is....would it be worth it or even work if I add a few salt pellets to my small tank. Just an fyi on my setup, its a 5 gallon (small for use in my kayak) that has a constant in and out flow of fresh water from the lake. No filter just a pump and outlet to keep water circulating. So would adding solid salt tablets keep enough dispersed to make a difference? Thanks for any insight fellas!

I wouldn't think so. You would just pump the salt out before it had a chance to do it's thing.

That was kinda my thought too. Been having a little trouble with scale loss and such but fot the number and length of time i keep em its not a huge issue. Just like having the best quality bait i can. Thanks!

If you could temporarily stop the flow when you added bait, you could let them linger in very salty water for about 5 minutes. They'd purge and the short time in the salt would go a long way towards preserving their scales.
When I catch bait, I put them in a Rubbermaid tub for 5-10 minutes that has 6 cups of salt in about 10 gallons of water. They go nuts and just about die, but they are hardy baits once transferred to the regular tank. And they are also very clean from purging.

I agree with john if you could stip the water and even at that time put a minnow pump in tank with the cooler water temps you shoud be fine.

Stopping water is no prob I put an on/off switch on there for the pump. It works on an overflow principl, tank fills to a certain level then excess just pours out the spout. Im gonna give it a shot worst that can happen is I waste some salt I guess. Never though about letting the shad sit in there for a bit before i turn the pump on honestly lol
