Shadslinger, Throw a handful of Cheetos (5 or 6) in the tank before you go to bed. That helps keep the foam down and you can eat the leftovers. Ahhh, we now know your secret .... cheese flavored shad.

What flavor creamer do you recommend? Think they'll like hazelnut? Ha

Can you get too much material in the box or are you ok as long as you still have good flow? Also I've tried the masonry sponges before but can't find any to fit the width of the filter box. Does it matter? I would think it would need to fit snug to avoid dirty water just running over the edge of the sponge.

I was in dollar general earlier and grabbed 2 big car wash sponges for the heck of it. Problem with those is the pump pumps dry faster then the water can filter through sponges. Gonna try some different sponges that might flow better possibly. Or either drop down to a 300gph pump.

I think that's why they are using grout sponges, they aren't nearly as absorbent as one to wash a car with. That's my thought anyway, I'm going to lowes home Dept and the pet store today!

I thought I responded to this earlier but guess not. I'm not making the filters for sale at this time. It I use polyfil batting (not the loose but the bonded polyfil for cushions and the like). I usually use 3-4" of it and the sponge filter from SBT on the top - and then layer of Ehfifix - which is the best stuff for catching gizzard slime, rinses right out and last forever

What do you normally put the carbon in? Do panty hose work?

For a short time, but that activated charcoal has sharp edges and will eventually tear them open. I get the 12 inch nylon bags from a pet store. If you keep the charcoal protected with prefilter matl the bags won't gum up. When that happens the charcoal starts going bad. If you take care of it, rinse it off after each trip it will last you a long time.

At Walmart in the craft section, they sell pillow fill. This is what Mike Ward is talking about. Use the type that is in rolls and about a 1/2 inch thick. I just cut to fit about two layers per trip per basket. As we know shad really dirty the water with scales and slime, when they are first caught. That's when the fill filters need to be rinsed in the lake every 15 minutes or sooner depending on the density of shad in the tank. By the way, it always helps to give then some time in a purge bucket. I have a small cube cooler and my filter set up is home made. I use 300 gph pump that goes up to a tee fitting with two drops into suspend baskets. Some days the shad seem healthier when I release them at the end of the day.
