Sorry to hijack shad! I am trying to find the best setup as well. Yam, what blue filter do you use? And I've tried the sponges but they tend to float! Any suggestion there? I included links in my original post. Just click on blue filter. The grout sponges are my workhorses. They don't float because I poke a hole in them and push them down on the standpipe. They are all you really need. The blue filter is over priced and will be removed from rotation once it disintegrates. I found them for 6.50 on Amazon -- they are 13.00 lowes or home depot -- one blue and one black -- the deal on amazon is not always there but it will pop up once in a while and then I buy 6 or so..

Yam - if you want a cheaper alternative to the blue pond filter you can try these cut to size air filters sold in the air filter section at Lowes or Home Depot - I have had good success with them. Cut to size air filter
Right around $6 and you can get multiple filters out of it and I believe it is a very similar material.

Petsmart has the charcoal pellets and the bags. I just picked some up earlier this week.

Shad... I had the same problem with a 30 gallon SBT2 and John, Yam and everyone was spot on with the filters giving me great advice. I also read on the forum and I was guilty of overfilling the tank with water to keep more bait. This seems to reduce the filtering capability. I have had no problems since.

Thank you all for the responses, and thank you Shad for starting this thread!! What are you using for a scale catcher? I bought my baker tank second hand and i think it has a wire mesh in there!

Yes thanks everyone for the advice. Definitely will be upgrading to better filters, charcoal, and zeolite. Changing water more frequently also. I believe I am having a ammonia problem. Everything is usually good before bed. Wake up to lots of foam and baits gasping for air. Mine came with the scale basket tray still in it luckily.

Hey shadslinger, one thing I do when keeping bait overnight and it's crazy but works. There's a product called foam off that keeps the foam down on top of the water, but coffee creamer powdered or wet works just as well. I rig up a little hanging string and poke a hole in the little tear off tab and put the string in it to hang over the tank, punch a tiny hole in the bottom of it with a needle so it drips like a drop every 1/2 hour or so. I know, I know it's redneck-but it works. That keeps the foam down all night. Whereas if you just spray foamoff on it and go to bed that only lasts about 2 hours. Yeah I can hear all you guys laughing now, but there's lots of time when we come over there and have to keep bait overnight so you adjust. Maybe someone has a better idea but this works for us.

That's sound Tenn.-engineering John . I like it. You need one of those clear bags for IV's that hospital have. Just adjust the drip while using the foam off.

Holy smokes - are we seriously considering giving our shad IV's now? At what point have we gone too far!

Hah that's a good trick John. I bet there is a lot of crazy little tricks people use. I've used creamer before also, and Gator uses cheetos. You are right on the foam off. I spray it at night and foam in the morning. Even leaving the scale basket out and lid open. I'm still thinking the loose poly isn't filtering the water enough and is allowing the ammonia to build up. With everybody's help I'll get it figured out

Shadslinger,
Throw a handful of Cheetos (5 or 6) in the tank before you go to bed. That helps keep the foam down and you can eat the leftovers.

As long as your lid is open, foam is not a problem other than you can't see your babies immediately. I have woke up in the morning to foam bubbling over the sides. A few sprays...and there they are...all lively and ready to go! Close that lid for an hour or so, and everyone dies!
