Yesterday before totally trashing my knee from throwing my net, I set out with a temperature probe and a desire to find a nice shot of the thermocline on downscan. I was not overly optimistic because this time of year, the thermocline is often times rather gradual. That is, cooler water is starting to break the thermocline up which ultimately decreases its gradient and the ability to accurately interpret it on sonar. Below is a temperature profile of the Tennis Courts area from yesterday. As shown, the thermocline or middle layer of the water column is located between 20 and 40 feet. Additionally, the degree of change from 81 to 67 is rather low as well. The below temperature profile tells me that turnover is very near for this area. Additionally, this profile told me not to expect anything on Downscan. As shown below, I did find 2 things on downscan. First, you can barely make out a layer between 25 and 35 feet. This is most likely the thermocline showing up on downscan. As mentioned, a thermocline that is steep will be very noticeable. In this example, you really have to squint to see it. However, this picture does provide a nice example of what to look for. Second, you can really make out something going on at 40 feet and below. I have no clue what this is but wonder if this correlates to the beginning of turnover for this area? Keep in mind the water upstream from this area is not stratified and has seen some pretty decent temperature changes in the last few weeks. Could that water mix up the bottom of this water? Anybody have any ideas? I'm not sure what exactly is going on, but I would put my money on "Turnover is Near!"

Today as I dived more into things because I can't friggen walk, I came across this excellent shot that represents what i was looking for yesterday. This came from: www.fishhunter.com/more-to-sonar/As shown, there is nothing going on below the cline. And wow...this picture is so pretty! From studying the temp curves on the SML Striper club website, it seems that your best bet for finding this type of cline would be sometime between May and July. My guess would be that the temperature of this water is >80 until 35 feet. From 35ft to 45ft, the temperature drops from 80 to 60 and then slowly drops to the mid 50s at 65ft. To me, this is way more valuable than seeing fish archs but pales in comparison to the value of walking without a limp.
