The new boat didn't make it too long. I was out yesterday on the lake and the engine went out. Had a grinding noise and I throttled back but it shut off and will not crank. makes the first hit but but won't do anything. Had to get towed from B11 to Lumpkins in the storm with the family on the boat. Not a fun time. Can someone recommend a mechanic for an Evinrude ocean pro 150. Thanks

Dang man, sorry to hear that. KB we both went through the pangs of winter rebuilds.
I hope it was the lower unit that went out and not the powerhead. Those oceanpros are great motors, although thirsty.
There are a few things that you can do yourself to assess the damage. You say it wont crank. Does this mean the motor wont spin over or it just wont start?

The motor won't spin over. It takes the first click but nothing engages. When it first shut down it would sound like the starter spinning but would just wind up and not engage the bendix but now it won't do that.

If you try and spin the flywheel by hand will it move at all? Hate to say it man but it sounds like you either threw a rod or seized a piston. One thing you can try is dropping the lower unit and then trying to spin her over. You may have gotten lucky and seized a bearing in the lower. Only way to tell is to get it out of your way and see if anything changes.
On that note, if it ends up being a blown powerhead, you may just want to look into a good used engine rather than a rebuild. I'd cover all options though. I have a nice evinrude 130 on my boat and I just put a remanufactured powerhead on it. Costed me $2600 ($2400 after my core was returned) and I pulled the old powerhead, dressed the new and re-installed her myself. Saved around $2000 this way. Looking around on CL I could have found a decent running engine for $2-4000 and just dropped it onto the transom.
Anyhow, you got my number. Let me know if you want some advice or help. I got the cherry picker ready to roll.

Thanks Pete. My boat is still at SML right now. I had a buddy that lives down there take it to Bryan at All Sport Mobile right down the road from our place in Penhook . He is supposed to diagnose it for me. He does most his work on the water so he's not at the shop a lot. I will know more once he takes a look at it I hope he can check it out this week. I am going down this weekend and will bring her home if I need to.

Cool man I wish you good luck. I know you forked out a lot of cash for that rig and were all excited about getting into striper season. Trust me I have been there. Before you know it this issue will be in your wake. Keep us posted. If you need a good lower I know where one is. Just gotta get my bud to come off it........

Found out today my lower unit went out. The mechanic said he can get me a re-manufactured one for $1,200 with a one year warranty. does this sound like a good price?

Thats not a bad price but I would have them run a compression test on motor to make sure it is ok also should be a few used units out there is it a 20 or 25 inch shaft

I got a used one with low hours for a good deal. I am not sure insurance will cover it unless you hit something.
