You think they would let me do this while holding a down-rod?

Smith Mountain Lake residents will be joining together in a bid to enter the record books this weekend. Final preparations are underway for the SML YMCA-sponsored pursuit to break the Guinness World Record for longest human floating chain. As of July 30, 889 individuals have registered to take part in the event — far more than the current record of 634 floaters set in Taiwan in 2014.
Anyone who may have missed the pre-registration can join before the event on Saturday. Check-in will begin Aug. 6 at 8:45 a.m. at Sailors’ Cove beach at Bernard’s Landing. Currently, weather forecasts call for a warm and sunny morning with little chance of rain. Anyone attending the world record attempt by land will be directed to the VISA Yacht Club parking area. Those coming by boat can be dropped off at a dock identified with an orange SML Charity Home Tour dock flag.
Boat operators can observe the attempt offshore, or they can anchor in the water and swim ashore to participate.
Each participant will be matched with his registration form, be given a numbered bib and be photographed before entering the beach through the official entrance. All participants must bring a float and must wear a life jacket.
Once in the water, participants must float atop a separate tube or raft and hold hands with the people on each side. Participants may need to hold the position for several minutes as photographic documentation is required to assure the record is broken.
For information on the SML YMCA’s Guinness World Record attempt, visit the events page at franklincountyymca.org.
The cost to participate is $5 per person or $10 per family.
