I have decided to share one of my unconventional fly fishing tactics that i use for catching fish on the fly. Any fishermen would much prefer casting and feeling the fish bite, but thats not always logical. So we have troll and fly fishing can be the same way.
When: once the sun comes out and you're searching. Once you have found fish, but they are scattered and not really schooled up. Or whenever you frankly feel like it.
How: I use Wise brand rod holders. They are very adjustable, fit a fly rod well, and they have a sliding lock (just incase the rod tries to pop out) The best part about the Wise holders is that they are made in the USA. I simply use the trolling motor and troll along at a steady pace. The lines i uses consists of a spectra style braided core and long sinking tip infused with tungsten and an extremely long running line. I start out with a decent cast and strip line out while i use the trolling motor to pull my self along until i have the desired amount of line out. Once i have all the line out i simply continue trolling.
The rig: I use standard 9 foot rods in a 10 weight. I like Echo Ion rods and reels, but any brand will do. My reels are all large arbor and loaded with 200+ yards of 20-30# dacron backing (depending on the size of the reel) For fly line i exclusively use Airflo Big Game Depth Finder. I carry a 300, 400, and 500 grain line with me. As for leader and tippet I'll do 3 feet of 40# flouro (seagar) and 2 feet of 20# Airflo hard flouro saltwater tippet. I run two flies on each rod and use the same #20 tippet to connect the second fly.
Flies: I tie all my own flies and have all my own patterns. Ultimately they are glorified clousers and decievers. Om my clouser style flies i use a considerably larger dumbbell eye than you work be able to find on a store bought fly. As for colors I mainly do either chartreuse or white or a combination of the two. I particularly like a weighted chartreuse fly with a weightless white fly behind it. I also use lots of flash material in my flies.
