Hey guys! I know this has probably been discussed on the forum before but I just needed one of you experts to help me with my question. I'm familiar with planer boards, as i have been catching some nice stripers with them. I'll mark a school and pull through it. However, I'm hearing people talk about Downlines for stripers in the summer. I've been successful with planer boards but is down lining more efficient because you stay on top of the schools the whole time? I would like to know how downlining can be better than boards. Thanks guys

I'm not one of the experts (they are busy out catching fish). but depends on how deep the fish are. I don't target fish deeper than 40ft any more in the summer months. The fish you are marking on your graph are under the boat while your planners are away from the fish....of course you could add heavy weights to your planners and fish them as sort of down lines also....also if the fish are moving fast, you can turn quicker with down lines.... I only caught 2 fish on down lines in the past 7 days.....every thing else on planners...

Thanks bigun2! Would you say you've been more successful with the planer boards more so than the Downlines because you have a bigger spread and cover more water?

Only when the fish are not deep and schooled up good.
