My older son is fishing a state bass tournament at Leesville this Saturday, and Sunday. They are fishing out of Pit Stop marina, which I think is now called Leesville marina. I am going to bring the boat and striper fish at Smith while they are doing the tournament. Considering the distance from the Leesville marina to Smith, and the water level, where is the best place for me to put in at? Also are there any decent hotels in that general area?

Others might know of a better place but prob your best bet to put in on SML is going to be the state park. Sorry cant help ya on the hotels.

Wow!!! The distance between the lake ramps is very long. It is hard to get from Leesville to Smith Mountain Lake in anything that looks like a reasonable time. I live an hour or so from each of the lakes. So you are looking at about two hours or more to go from the ramp at Leesville Marina to Halesford Bridge. There is a motel east of Bedford on 460 that would split the difference. But I cannot vouch for it. It is not a major chain.
Good luck.

Yes there is a motel east of Bedford, close to the truck stop, also one on the west side of bedford jsut off the by-pass and Lake end at west lake. Do a search on Bedford and all of them should show up. As for ramps the state ramp at Halesford is open and looks good.

I live down here on Leesville Lake, assuming since the tournament is the main reason you are here you have the Hampton Inn in Gretna, and Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn in Altavista, any of these 3 will put you in a 10-15 min drive to the ramp at Leesville Marina ( I can do it in 8mins.... ;D) As far as SML goes, it does not take no where near 2 hrs to get to halesford bridge. 45 mins tops going either way around the lake (out of altavista on 43 or 834 off of 40 in union hall). If you wanna put in at the state park you can run 43 out of altavista and follow signs to state park. bout a 30 min drive. If you stay in Gretna you could run up 40 and fish the blackwater side of SML and put in at union hall (blackwater Marina B37) which is a 20 min drive. or go up 40 to 834 and follow that to scruggs rd, take a left, go to the end and take a right at the light which is 122 headed towards Hales ford bridge.........Or you could just fish Leesville for stripers... Any more qtns just ask. Just a few options, once you decide ill be glad to narrow it down to the quickest and easiest drive for you.
