Got up to the lake Thursday about dark. Got up at 3:30 to hit some lights. Made one throw off my light (which hasn't been all that productive lately) and it was my first one and done. Brought it about 60 bluebacks and 30 or 40 medium sized ales. Had to throw a bunch back to avoid overcrowding the tank. It's painful to throw out that good bait. Was back in bed by 4.
Started putting lines in at 5:30. Had action right away. Missed a few and had two come loose. Finally managed to boat a few. Ended up with 4 and a cat. All were right at or just shy of 30". About 8:30 the shore bite totally died. Pulled until about 10 and decided to call it a morning.
Topped off the tank Saturday morning again with one throw. Went up river this time and had action again right away boated two right away. This time instead of continuing my pull, I circled back and was able to pick up two more. Fished that stretch for about an hour and a half picking up another and missing a few here an there. Pulled on down the lake picking up two more. Then the bite died about 8:30 again. Instead of grinding it out like I had been doing, pulled out into the deep water. It was a good decision. Started marking small schools in twenty to 30 fow. Then all 8 baits would get nervous at once. Picked up 4 more doing that with a double at one point. Missed at least 3 or 4 others that hooked up while I was in the middle of a fight and came loose before I could get to them. Ended up with 11, 33" the biggest and a big bass for the morning. Headed in about 11 pretty tired.
After my son heard about Saturday he decided he wanted to go out this morning. Started in the same spot as yesterday. Just got the lines out a a big one came up on the float. He picked up the rod and set the hook when it hit. It was taking a lot of drag and he couldn't make much progress. I probably should have taken over but I really wanted to see him get it. After another 5 minutes the liter broke. I was heartbroken. I really wanted to see him get it. Circled on the area that produced so well the day before but it was pretty dead. Picked up one tinny one. It was the smallest striper we've ever caught that wasn't in a cast net. Pulled up river instead of down. That was probably a mistake. Not a lot of action. In fact none until we caught a really small cat. At about 8:30 my son had lost all interest and was laying down in the back of the boat. Decided I wasn't going to make a fan out of him with fishing like this so we headed in. What a difference a day makes. Went from one of my best days to one of the worst quickly. At least I got to spend some one on one time with my son.
Fished 4 free line boards, two lite line boards, a lite line and a free lined float. Bluebacks and ales. All baits caught fish but the bluebacks were by far the most popular. Float produced by far the most action.
