Weather: 70 at sunrise rising to 80 around 10am, foggy to start with complete white-out on lower end of lake - cleared off on upper end by 7am, no real wind to speak of
Water: 81, visibility of a couple of feet
Techniques: 10-11 rod spread - couple big gizzards on freeline planers, alewives on light-lines (4), light-line planers (2), free-line planers and downlines (2)
Went out Fri evening around 10:30 to a targeted dock-light to catch bait - tossed a 1/2", 10' net and and gilled a million baits.... switched over to a 5/8" and was getting a few - moved over to another light after a while and around 11:30p I was getting good numbers and good sizes. Put way too many baits in the tank as always - headed back to the dock but stopped at one other light with the intention of pulling out some big gizzards - scored 6-8 in one throw and headed to the dock and in bed about 1am with a 5:30a wake-up call
Got on the water around 6am or a bit after - plenty light out - but the fog was setting in a bit - ran in and out of it, being treated to another great sun-rise
My plan was to search some creek mouths away from where Nathan and I fished - I pass 5 to 6 of the guides as I headed down the lake - hummmm..... but sometimes you gotta pull against the grain. I put out bait and pulled a shoal hoping to find a big fish having a morning meal, but no action of any form - pulled in the baits and sonar searched the creek - the fog really set up but I ran on down to another major creek to look - didn't see a lot of bait and did not mark any fish.... so I decided to head back up the lake towards where we fished Friday AM to see if it was a better bite. Thank goodness for my radar to let me make decent time through the fog, and then it cleared on up as I got a bit further up the lake.
Put out baits in the area where we'd fished Friday AM and pulled. And pulled, and pulled. Not marking anything and no action - made a loop in the mouth of a cree and as I circled back out a planer with a monster blueback or alewife got hooked up. 32" / 12 lb to ditch the skunk.
Was pulling a full spread - a lot to manage alone but got it done
After a while I moved on up the lake a little further just to see - pulling the mouth of another creek - marked some fish and more bait there so was hopeful, but no action until I pulled close to a bank / main lake point - a light-lined planer with an alewife got bit and thought I had a smaller striper on until the fish came up and tail-danced on the surface - a dang ol' bass. Weighed in at 6 lbs and 21.5" - 1/2" short of a VA Angler citation.
Headed back to the house about 10am - unfortunately not with info on "where" to fish Sunday, but maybe I've eliminated some unproductive water.....
