I fished the Gills Creek area late Friday night. I heard the alewife spawn going on pretty strong and sure enough the predatory fish were crushing them, but I couldn't get a bite.
I threw my Rapala F17, swimbaits of all kinds, buzzbait, chatterbaits, other diving minnow crankbaits. No hits. Very exciting but SO frustrating. If anyone had any luck I'd love to hear about it. I threw right to the bank; I threw deep. Felt like I was trying everything but they weren't interested.

Ahh..... a typical night-fishing trip when I go It can be so frustrating when you hear those bass and striper blowing up bait all around you within feet and you can't get a bump on the lure.....

Night fishing can be tough. I noticed a lot of carp spawning up next to the banks Sat. as I threw on bait. Is it possible some of the busting heard were carp doing their love making?

I would agree with drag we live on Gills Creek and my son has been bow fishing off the dock and it seems like they are getting more active as the water warms up.

Interesting theory that they could've been carp. These were serious, VIOLENT explosions. Is that what carp sound like when spawning?? I noticed some guys in kayaks fishing the banks in my area too; seemed like they thought the fish were predatory, too.

I noticed that the smaller A series (3.5"-1/4oz) Thundersticks had more action than the larger lures did. You can't reel them slow enough. Tight lines!

We use lights around our dock and banks this time of year to bow fish and it is surprising the mix of things you will see. Anything from big carp, LM, Striper or channel cat. One of the things we found interesting was the amount crawfish in the rip rap. Seems like in the last week we have been seeing more carp but those very well could have been a striper LM or catfish hard to tell.

Live on the BW and have been on the night bite for a while. Noticed that the cliffs and some of my spots from previous years were full of bait but not as many stripers. After moving around to some secondary points found areas that had good Amounts of stripers. Friday night was nice until I had a 16lb fish snap my 8wt fly rod...at least I got to land the fish. After that switched back to f18 vampire and had good bites on that as well. I would move up the channel from gills a bit further had better luck in that area.

Fished down lake, found a few fish busting shorelines but not in big numbers... Moved down to Hales Ford, caught some bait and got into a pretty good catfish bite. Fished untill 9 am or so. Slept on the Island till 2 PM in my hammock, woke up and ran from the rain. Trailered boat, and slept in my truck untill 6 PM. Woke up, cussed the wind and drove home.

Fly, haha I like the napping move and cussing the wind. Yea I'm pulling out the 10wt as we speak, surprised since I've used my 8 for reds, baby tarpon etc and it's been great for fish under 20lbs but it couldn't withstand the head shake of that striper. Hand lined it in so at least got the satisfaction of landing the bastard. God I love this time of year, absolute best fishing time on sml! Minus the constant wind BS

Man I forgot to mention Friday, day fishing, had my dad down for first time fishing in a year. Decided to take him down to the dam area for old time sake and see if I could mark anything. Was fishing with the dreaded bait and planers so moved around a bit, until multiple schools started busting topwater mid day in the wind!! Couldn't believe it! All around R2 area and was hard to see between the white caps but schools were casing bait on top regularly, pulled up bait and did some run and gun action with the rapala max rap and popovich hollow flies! Was such a blast landed 5 should have had ten more but was so hard to stay on them with the wind, whattya know
