Didn't get to fish this past weekend so I decided to play hooky from work today. Got over yesterday evening around 5 and started on bait. Spent 3 and a half hours and only ended up with two nice baits and about a dozen larger peanuts.
Every week I have this pipe dream I'll come over and get all the bait I need in 20 minutes, do a little evening fishing and get to sleep in. Every week it's the same as it was this morning. Up at 4 to start throwing on lights. I did get 6 mongos on my first throw this morning so that took some of the sting out of the early wake up. Ended up with a dozen 8-14" shad, a dozen blue backs, and another dozen big ales.
Didn't want to go down to the dam so I decided to start up river after reading Jason's report from last weekend. First spot was pretty slow so I picked up and headed down river. Next spot I missed one and had a lot of action and chases so I doubled back. Picked up one immediately and had two others come loose including one that got tangled up in a light line. Had to cut everything loose and re-tie. Missed two more (while I was on the phone with work no less).
Moved again to an area I've never fished before. Had steady nervous baits and chases but do didn't have any takers until a blueback on a float got nailed screaming drag. Grabbed the rod and it was gone. Reeled the bait in and it wasn't missing a scale. Usually they are all skinned up.
Fished for about seven and a half hours and only caught one fish but it was pretty consistent action. There have been times I've felt like I'm fishing in a dessert, not today despite only bringing one to the boat. Fish weren't interested in the mongos, never had a chase. Used all my 8-10" shad and went through a dozen bluebacks. Mainly because they were all skinned up after being chased. Not great results but a fun day. Beats working.
