Primetime and I met up at the dock about 3pm on Friday in hopes of catching a few bait and fishing till dark. After an hour or so we had one mongo and 15 dollar size shad in the tank. We headed to a spot that has been good in the past and set out a spread of 4 freeline boards 2 lightline boards ans 2 redi-rig floats. We started having action fairly quick and it wasn't long until the mongo got hammered. Turned out to be a nice 34" nearly 16 pound fish.
With no more mongo things slowed drastically. We did get another chase or two but no more fish for Friday. We called it a day and set our sights on catching ales for a Saturday dam trip. We threw on several lights for several hours and finally thought we had a proper bait selection for the morning. Harley had a friend from New Jersey in town who was looking to catch his first freshwater striper so he jumped on and we headed down the lake early Saturday morning. We put out a striper buffet down at the dam and in craddock creek with every size bait and every presentation I could think of but couldn't get bit. We fished down that way for several hours with no luck. Finally made the decision to head back to where we had caught the fish the day before. Good thing we did! We ran nearly an hour back up the roanoke side and put out 5 mongos on freeline boards and 2 floats with huge ales. We missed several fish then finally Had one eat a big ale. Andrews fist Va. striper was a nice 33 inch male (we know because he had to wash his hands after posing for the picture)
Soon after that fish we had another mongo get slammed and I set the hook on what felt like a heavy fish but it broke me off early in the fight. Next we had a bankside planer blow up and Andrew got into a real fight. Drag was screaming he was having a hard time doing anything with the fish I thought we were in for something special. Turned out to be a nice 36" striper that was foul hooked in the outside of the gill plate.
We fished a little longer and packed it in for the day. All in all turned out to be a good day. It cost Harley a lot of unnecessary fuel to put Andrew on the fish but I'm sure it was worth it.
Thanks Harley for having me aboard again!
On a side note Harley's new 36 volt Riptide Ulterra is awesome. It performed flawlessly all day and still had plenty of battery left.
