This trip goes back to our trip there in the first week of march. We were looking for big trout on that trip, but caught everything in the lake but trout that day. I vowed we'd return for redemption...
And we did on May 7th. We arrived at the ramp at 6am with a load of alewives and gizzards, only to see nearly 100 bass boats scattered about prepping for a tournament. Talk about throwing a monkey wrench into some plans!!
With cloudy and calm weather, I had planned to pull bait on freelined planers for most of the morning. But I knew with all the bass boats zipping around, that our window of opportunity would be short. We quickly launched and headed into a creek. About 20 minutes we had a fish blow up a big alewife on a steep bank. I hooked it and got it right to the boat, where it started to roll. Of course we didn't have the net out... .... ..... It eventually got the planer board in its mouth (no bead) and spit the hook. It was a stud brown trout. I was sick.
That would prove to be our only trout encounter for the day. Soon after, the fog burned off, the sun came out and the boats started flying around. We had trouble finding fish for a while but we ended up with 9 and a few more lost and missed. 5 yellow perch, 2 of which were citation and 4 smallmouths between 16 & 19 inches. 3 of those came on top water at 6pm as we were packing up shop, of course. That was an awesome few minutes.
Water Temps were 65, and we could see our bait a bit over 10' deep. We tried everything and everywhere for trout, but never had any bites. Marked a bunch of fish I thought might have been trout, but I really have no idea.
I love that lake, I wish I lived closer. I said I wouldn't spend anymore time chasing trout there, but I think I've gotta go back...
