im not sure about the penhook area, but in my experiences, the bass in SML love the colors green, white, and chrome with black back. I like to use baby bass senkos, pearl white super flukes, baby rage craws(summer craw), chrome/black red eye shads, and strike king 5XD/6XD crankbaits. Ive also caught them on other lures, but those have been the most efficient for me. oh well, other than live night crawlers.
If you notice bass cruising around your dock, use a small hook(i like the 1/0 gamakatsu split/drop shot hooks for this method), weightless is best but if you need some weight to cast use no more than a small split shot up the line, and nose hook a night crawler one time in that fat meaty ring part of it and toss it out. its almost impossible for bass to resist it. When the bass does strike it, it will happen quick, so be ready to set the hook. obviously this method works best for sight fishing...
i also throw out a minnow trap which catches me more crawdads than anything. i was fishing one shallow on the edge of a downed tree just off the dock. a bass came in and started inspecting it as soon as it hit the water and started sinking, at that point i give it a jerk back towards me so it looked like it was swimming away from the bass. once i did that it triggered the bass to attack the crawdad. it was seriously one of the most violent things ive ever seen. this bass hit with viciousness like ive never seen. it was amazing to see.
