Fished for crappie at the reservoir today. Took my future wifey to be. We had an awesome time, beautiful spring day. Pulled live minnows on floats and small planer boards with bait at 12' deep over creek channels. Water temp was 62-63.Fish was hard to catch today, for the first couple hours we was getting lots of bites but couldn't hook the fish some we would have on for just a few seconds and then throw the hook. Couldn't figure it out, tried hooking minnows in tail, head, and top. Tried faster presentation then slow. Not sure what was happening. Then all of a sudden things changed, we started catching everything that hit. Guess they decided they was hungry? Not sure but whatever the case I'm glad of it. Finiched day with 13 slabs in the livewell, 4 largemouth, and several bluegill. Well and here it is the story we all know so well, the big one that got away!! I have been crappie fishing all my life, caught probably thousands in my time, but nothing like the one I almost had today. He was a beast of a slab CRAPPIE, one you could only dream of. He had to have been 4lbs, he was by far the biggest I've ever personally seen. I got him all the way up to the edge of the boat, and as I was trying to figure out weather to get the net or just hoist him in real quick the hook in slow motion just came right out. For a second he lay there lifeless, I before I could think to try and grab him he swished his tail and just slowly swam away I honestly thought about jumping in after him, it was such a heartbreaker. I do believe I cried for a bit. The wife to be said I was over reacting, "it's just a fish, get over it, it's not the end of the world" maybe not to her. But all in all a great day. Maybe I will catch ole Moby again one day, next time I'm going in after him
