My brother saw the forecast for Saturday and flaked on me and my son for Saturday so my wife stepped up and replaced him. Little does he know permanently. Got to the lake Thursday evening to start on bait. It was blowing pretty good and I was alone so it was a real PITA. Didn't manage one good bait but I was hauling a few dozen peanuts out at a time. Called it a night after about three hours of frustration. I was hoping to fish Friday but that wasn't going to happen. Got up at 4:30 to start on bait on lights. Checked my usual lights and they were all pretty much empty. Managed a few medium ales. As day broke I picked up one nice bait 8"-12" at a time until 9:30. I had 7 and decided I could make that work, and after throwing the net that much my hands were shot. Wife and son weren't going to get there until 6 so I decided to go out again around 3 before check in. Scouted around more this time an found a new spot that produced 3 nice ones before I packed it up to go check in.
Saturday morning the plan was to pull some main channel points then pull into a creek looking for some protection. Plan started out great. The wind was manageable and we picked up our two best fish in the first 15 minutes. Then all of the sudden the wind started to gust and had to change plans. Picked up and motored to the creek. There were some protected areas but they were limited. Picked up a small on a light line rigged with a peanut about 8 and that was it. Had one more chase up at 8:30 and done. Finally decided to put up the boards and down line some big bait in a cove that had produced some big bait and was protected. Marked some fish in the baits and had some nervous bait but never got hooked up again. Ended the day cold and tired, grateful we had gotten three. My wife and son were real troopers.
Got a late start Sunday about 8:00. What a different story, probably one of the calmer days we've had all spring. Started off in a creek and it was pretty slow. Did have a light line peanut get smoked. Made a good initial run got him close to the boat but he was still deep. Ran off 50 yards of line then pulled the hook. Started pulling main channel and started getting bait swirled up to the top on nearly every point but couldn't get any takers. Finally hit a time period right around lunch where the swirls turned into chases, then into pullbacks, and fish. Lasted for about two hours then back to just nervous baits. It was weird. Ended up with 8 31" was the biggest.
Big thanks to Mike and Tyler for the job they did with the entire series. Thought it was great they managed to raise nearly $700 for a great cause, this weekend alone. Glad to see the series continue next year.
