Today I had the pleasure of braving the elements with Bentrod and Brock the Rock. We had two areas that we had our eyes on and felt our window of opportunity was early morning. And after losing our first two fish at sunrise to broken lines, there was a sense that we were screwed.
Wind and snow squalls blew us off our first spot so we decided to motor to our second. Prior to getting to our destination, I decided to get stupid and start a pull straight into a 20 mph sustained wind. I couldn't hold it with the TM, thus I pulled us into a "snowicane" with the big motor and had that feeling that ultra stupid might get it done. I even told the boys that the fish like stupid and sure enough a rod got slammed and we landed our first fish at 30".
Then it was lockjaw as every single honey hole that has been kind to me the last month was dead as a doornail. The boat was resigned to give up but somehow around 2pm we put our game faces on and worked our butts off!
Happy thoughts and optimism were no match for nature but perseverance was finally rewarded. On our last and final pull as making a tight turn and heading home, Bentrod looked back and saw what he thought was me fighting yet another tree. But this was no tree... It was a last minute 32.5" fish that took our spirits from "oh well we tried our best" to "oh my God I can't believe what just happened." It was a last minute shot and it felt like we won the Olympics.
We didn't care about placing, we just wanted two fish. And those were the hardest two fish I have ever caught.
Fishing tourneys certainly adds a different twist to this passion and I'm glad I joined in. Like KB, I learned a whole ton about myself and uncovered a plethora of areas for improvement. Without the hard work and dedication of striper mafia and especially MWard, I would be minus many new skills, new anticipations, and most importantly, I would be less knowledgeable of my fellow hunters who frequent the same honey holes as I.
A real pleasure indeed. Thank you all for loving this sport like I do!
Cheers to Danny Foster...
