My son Carson and I arrived Friday afternoon later than planned around 1:30. Unloaded our bags and then launched boat for the first time this year. Made a run up blackwater side to staniford creek to start looking for big bait. When we got there some guys in a skiff were already throwing a net and said they were only catching little bait. We started in another area of the creek and sure enough we were only finding small gizzards. I received a call from my buddy R22 saying that they were up on the roanoke side in a creek and were catching big gizz pretty good so we made the long haul up there. When we got there he said he was pretty loaded up and needed to get his bait back to his big home tank soon. I started throwing and shortly after wards I started catching a few. R22 went and threw also in a different spot and caught some and gave them to me. He told me I was welcome to stop by his place on the way back down the lake to ours and drop my bait off in his bait cage since he was dumping his in his big home tank and then I could pick them back up in the morning on our way back up river. He left and we kept throwing. Called it quits around 5:20 with about 18 nice baits in the tank. We stopped on the way back down lake to register and talk with Mike about 5:40 , then went on down to R22's to unload bait, and hurried back down to our place to meet my buddy Don who was going to fish the tourney with us.
Saturday morning we left dock at 5:45 and were at R22's dock by 6:15 to pick up our baits. His crew was getting ready to leave as we loaded our bait and he told me I was welcome to walk up and grab a few extra baits out his home tank to top ours off so we grabbed about 6 more, Sweet! We headed on up roanoke side knocking sticks and who knows what else on the way to a major creek and started setting out baits at lines in time. Started dragging baits into the creek . About halfway back in we started marking a few fish here and there and lots of bait so we thought it was gonna be a good morning. Well we were wrong. we had 2 runs coming out but that was it. We trolled on out and started pulling on up river. About 11:45 it was raining pretty good and we were having no action, my son who is 8 was getting quite bored so I decided to make a move down river to fish another creek. We got set up and fixed lunch while trolling around through the creek , we had one good run and a blowup but really was not seeing much. I decided to pull out of the creek and start pulling points. Turned out to be a good call , first main point we had a blowup on a free lined bank side board that came tight and we boated our first fish at 1:00. Decided to pull the same area. We had four more blowups and runs but they never came tight. About 2:45 we were coming back over the same point we caught our fish on and my son yells "cork line dad!" I turned and watched and didn't see anything , neither did Don so I turned away. A few seconds later he yells "CORK" and as I turn and look the cork goes down as he is jumping on the rod. Fish On! Seeing how it was the way back rod it gave him quite a good fight but he managed it to the boat and we netted our second fish of the day. We hung in a little longer to try to pick up another but pulled lines at 3:10 to head to check in. We had a total of 58" with the only 2 fish we caught.
I had a great time fishing with Don and my son in not so great conditions. Carson is already talking about the next tournament. My wife says I have created another obsessed fisherman, lol. I have to give a big thanks to R22 for his generosity. I plan to get you back bud. It was nice to talk with Jason , his dad, and his youngest son. Congrats to him on first place in youth division. Nice to meet Primetime , KB , and also to talk with Live Bait Junkee again. Big thanks to Mike,Tyler, Striper Club , and all the sponsors for another outstanding event. See you all again in a few more weeks.
