Hey fellas,
Its a really long story, but had a good friend of mine's boat get hit pretty hard on the water by some drunken A-hole at 30MPH. That was the day I blew my 130hp Evinrude. Terrible day, to say the least.
Anyways, he got hurt pretty badly, as he is almost 80 years old and hit the deck HARD after the impact. Worst thing is the jerk-off drove off. Luckily I got his boat reg #, called it in to the police, and they nabbed him up. He is some rich bastard with a new tri-toon and 250HP Yammie on the back. He lives on the water so they tracked him and his boat easily.
Went to court to testify for my buddy, and they gave the bozo a huge fine, took his boaters license for 12 months, and a criminal conviction for reckless boating.
Buddy got a fat check for $18k, bought him a new Tahoe, and is in the market for a new boat. Filing civil suit soon as he has some neurological damage.
I got a call last week saying, "Hey Pete, come on over and pick up my seapro. He GAVE me his 2003 22'6" seapro, with SS T top, 150hp Yamaha all setting on an aluminum tandem axle trailer. Hull has a GIGANTIC crack in it that I have no desire to fix. So, Im going to strip her down bare, and either offer the bare hull to someone or take her to the junkyard.
SO, the question is this, do I sell the motor, keep it, or get another boat to plop her on? Keep the trailer etc. I could either sell the Neptune or keep it. It is a great boat. A little older so the gelcoat is faded, but hey, its a fishin boat.
I JUST put a reman powerhead on the motor. It only has 5 hours on it. It runs very nicely. Great power, pops the boat on plane, and decent on gas. The issue is it is louder and smokier than the Yam, but it has had the fuel system all cleaned up with new carb kits, fuel pump components, fuel lines, fuel filter, prime bulb and new ignition system. She starts up pretty good, but you have to let her high idle for a bit longer so that she will idle in gear well (keep in mind I have only been able to run her on 20-30 degree days at this point). It is a '95 so the technology is a bit dated. Once warmed up, she starts right up the rest of the day and pushes the boat 39MPH with a full tank of gas and bait tank. It is set up for premix too, so that may be part of the reason for hard cold starts and rough cold idle. A new VRO (fuel/oil pump) is $300 and just havent wanted to put more money than is necessary into it than I already have. This boat has 150HP on the tag, so those extra 2 cylinders will really make a difference on her......
My issue is I LOVE outboards. Just LOVE them. And this Yamaha is so sexy and super clean. I do not know much of the service history on her, but she fires right up and idles perfectly off the bat. Would need a waterpump, gear oil change, thermostat and oil tank cleaning if I were to keep her. I do all my own maintenance and am very particular about my motors. I could probably sell the motor for $3500 in just a few days, especially this time of year, but man it will be hard to watch her go.
