Weather: Bluebird skies 70 degrees wind 10-15
Water temp: 61
Bait: 6-10" Gizz
Time: 1:30 - 7:00
Technique: Freelined planers, 2 oz down lines
Arrived at the lake around 11:00 and planned to try and catch bait to pre fish the tournament to have a better idea where to go Saturday. Bait was loaded in the backs of creeks and medium bait was caught within an hour or so. Left the creek we were in and headed to another creek we had fished last time but didn't have any luck. Put out the spread in about 10ft of water and started working our way out. About halfway out of the creek we started marking some good stuff, not the big girls we were looking for but fun none the less.
Picked up one of these on a down line
Decided to leave this creek and find a back up place to fish in case it was crowded Saturday. Spent an hour or two graphing a few places before putting the baits back out. Had a couple of explosions on some boards later in the afternoon but that was it.
3/19
Weather: 30 - 40 periods of light rain, cloudy with some wind that died down later
Time: 7:00 - 3:30
Bait: 8-12" gizz
Technique: Freelined planers, and a couple 2oz down lines
Water temp: 58
Woke up at 5:00am and had plans to hit the creek where we caught the one fish the day before. As it started getting light the fish were definitely still there and we had some light surface activity for about 10 minutes. Casted a swim bait to them but only got a small tug on one cast. The planers were about to drag over them so we just waited them out. Had one blowup on the redirig bobber and completely missed the bait. This was the story for the day multiple explosions on bait with missed hookups. We stayed in the same creek all day and managed three fish, but never found the 2 big ones we needed. Our biggest bait 12"+ got blowed up on all day, probably by smaller fish. That guy made it all day on a Freelined planer and was released back after we were done no doubt entering the gizzard hall of fame.
I was fairly certain this was a catfish by the way it felt..nope foul hooked in the side..
Our biggest caught on a 1/2 oz weight on a bobber
Thanks to Mike and Tyler for putting on another great tourney. I'll be getting these two days logged in the fishing diary y'all provided. Good talking to the Live Bait Junkee again as always, we need to hit the James river here soon. Also fished the same creek with Mark Crawford that runs a guide service in Georgia, nice talking with you on the water. Friday talked with someone else in a Tracker boat that asked if I was on the forums, but I can't remember what your username was? Hope to get back out there for the April tourney.
