I like to anchor, put out a light and catch alewives. I was wondering if using a 1/4 in mesh net would help to keep from gilling the smaller ones or will you just gill the real small ones. thanks

1/4" will work well for alewives over a bait light.. I don't think you will gill any with a 1/4" net.

Thanks, think I will give it a try. I spend so much time trying to get the gilled alewives out of the net and its nasty too!

I use a half inch and it sucks for gilling the small ales. A 3/4 will only bring up the real big ales. 5/8 seems like your best best unless you want the small guys. If you want the little ones, the 1/4 would be my choice.
