Got over to the lake Thursday after work looking to take advantage of the better weather. Tried my light for bait about 9. Didn't have a single mark on the sonar, threw around for about an hour, nothing. That's the first time I've never gotten anything off my light. Gotten many small baits you wouldn't want to fish with but never seen it blank. Got up at 3:30 to try again. Was able to get small to medium sized ales, but the bait was thin. Didn't really mark anything. Wanted to fill my tank for the weekend but only got about 3 dozen before they were totally gone after about an hour.
Really wanted to fish boards so I put my biggest baits out and pulled a creek. Water was only 40 so I had my doubts. Pulled the creek, had a couple of nervous baits one bait swirled up and one quick pull back. That was it. I was marking nice pods of fish between points so I decided to pull in the boards and fish down lines. Pulled downs and light lines all afternoon through piles of fish. Nothing. Finally picked up a 19" on a light line right before I quit to find bait.
Bait was really deep. Threw and threw on thirty five foot deep bait. Nothing.
Up at 4 again Saturday morning. Bait again real thin at my lights. Decided to just run downs an light lines. Pulled through scattered fish all morning. Fish would come right up to my lines and run back down. My wife and son were over so I went back in early. Got them to come out with me in the afternoon. They read books while I read my sonar light up with piles of fish that weren't at all interested in ales. Headed back in after about 2 hours. Skunk.
Got up on my light at 3:30 this morning, put about two dozen medium to small size ales in the tank and they were all gone within an hour. Went back to bed until 5:30 to try again. Nothing. No marks no bait in the net after about 15 throws around the light.
My bait was terrible but I really wanted to try boards again, telling myself the water was a little bit warmer than Friday. Pulled a creek. Water was 43 so I was hopeful. Had a few nervous baits and that was it. Marked some schools between points again so I pulled the boards and went all downs again. Nothing. Another skunk.
Good to be out on the water vs shoveling snow but think I'm going to let the water warm up a bit before I make another trip. Rough weekend.
