I have been fishing with baitcasters since I was 10 or 11 years old and I still get an occasional backlash. Sometimes they are so bad that I put the rod down and grab another and fix it when I get home. Some of the worst ones come during a night trip when I'm casting and hit another rod or the console in my boat and WOW. Saw this video on Facebook and thought I'd share. Check it out. bassfishingstrike.com/best-trick-for-clearing-backlash/2/

Great video Gator. I saw Ricky Clunn at the Eastern Sports Show in Harrisburg a few years ago demonstrating that. Had forgot about it. Although some of the birdsnests I get require a knife!

I am going to have to try that. I agree I think nighttime is the worst maybe just my depth perception. My sons was notorious for this he would get over confident and takes off the brakes and time to re-spool. The best tip I was told to help people starting or never used one was to cast it out as far as you can and put a wrap of blue painters tape (not very strong and line will break it if getting spooled) then reel it in so it will only backlash down to that tape and usually easy to fix. I use it on all the rods my kids use and works great I can clear them in no time.

I really don't know how anyone does anything with these things and I am furthermore dissapointed that scissors werent included in the box with the reel.

Know idea how long you have been using one but try this, After setting the spool brake for the lure you are using, turn the reel hand so your reel spool is sideways not straight up. Then cast. This will cause your wrist to move the way it was designed and makes it easier to thumb the spool, sideways. My dad who used the old school baitcasters where the reel handle spun as you made the cast taught me this method when I was 8. It works. My grandson who us 9 is doing it good until he gets excited.
