I never fish the Blackwater..well at least above about Crazy Horse. Haven't been up there in 5 or 6yrs. Kind of bored with the Roanoke, so decided to head over there today and Bo and his friend Troy joined me. Fishing the Blackwater is almost like fishing a whole new lake, but I love exploring like that and that's when I learn the most. Started off pulling boards on the upper end and marked some fish but all hanging tight to the bottom, so we switched over to downrods to try and pick a couple up but still no interest. Said heck with that and went looking for some bigger shad. Couldn't find any up there, so we ran down to Crazy Horse for a mexican lunch. I got a taco, Troy got a burrito, and Bo got a visit to the toilet bowl!
After lunch, I had no idea where to go and didn't want to get skunked, so I did only thing I knew to do this time of year.. Go find some big shad on or near a big flat, catch some shad, then fish the area over good. Not much hard about it! Found some moneymaker size shad in Gills, netted bout 25 or so pretty easily and then started pulling boards. Started catching some fish immediately and did ok for the rest of the day. Wouldn't say we wore them out by any means, but Troy caught his first striper, second striper, third striper, fourth striper, fifth striper, and so on! ;D We let him do all the catching since he had to ride behind Bo after the Mexican! Moneymaker shad on freelines and lightlines did the trick. Water temps were 65-68 mainly.
Cool thing happened..saw a school of 15-20 stripers on the sidescan off to our right in about 18ft of water..Told Bo to get ready and a few seconds later all heck broke loose on our two right side boards. Both boards went down and several others were busting all around the boards..pretty cool site.
Hit a creek by the house on the way back and filled my tank up in one throw.
