I thought I posted a report last night but it looks like it never made it...not sure why...
1/17- Got to the lake about 11AM...my semi-retired, recent college graduate son came up the night before and filled the tank with some of the biggest ales I've ever seen. A few were downright mutant....we marked fish in upper Gills, they weren't interested in what we were selling. Had the pleasure of meeting Coheason, who appeared to be having the same day as us....( nice ride Coheason!)....fished the BW S curves, cliffs, Staniford....we were determined to be active....changing baits and locations often. All to no avail. There wasn't a bird in sight. My theory is that now that Gator is trespassing on the Roanoke, he's taken the stringer with him and the Blackwater is a virtual WASTELAND....( that's with a "teenage" preface for you Yam). The water temps were 48, the air was about 40. Cold , but not bad at all.
1/18 - hit the water late...about 11AM. The plan was to drive into the wind (NW 10 -15mph) all the way upriver, turn around and scout our way back. We went all the way to B48 and made a U'ey. Tons of big bait up there...but I'm not as hardcore as Coheason and the net stayed in the bucket. We were convinced we would either mark jiggable schools or chase birds...we did neither. We carefully scouted all the way downriver...zigzaggin from main channel to shoreline, staying alert, scanning the sky, talking about future employment opportunities. We marked a few fish in a little cutoff north of Magnum and actually had a few taps on jigs but our hands were pretty numb. Missed 'em all. Kept scouting all the way downriver....we didn't mark a thing. Heck, we even made the left up Gills just to be sure we were thoroughly beaten...and we were. 2 days on the water...2 skunks. Upper BW had water temps at 44....air temps at 24 - 33. It was cold.
Now we all say this all the time...but was a good day nevertheless. If my son had a choice we would still be out there...but the old man had had enough and we called it quits around 4:30.
Here's the good news...we enjoyed some excellent venison salami sandwiches, saw a few big hawks working a brush field, breathed some cold, clean air....and my new Striker Ice cold weather float suit was awesome...I was warm despite the temps. Best skunk I've had in a long time.
