Wednesday was not as kind to me as the days before. My bait wasn't great tried to get some bigger bait the afternoon before but after four hours and hanging my net in a tree I was only able to make about a dozen 6 inch peanuts. Threw hundreds less than 5" over the rail. I was too tired and sore (50 throws with a 17lb net had taken its toll from the day before) to try my light in the morning so I just went with what I had. Pulled boards on main channel points. Got a small right away then a couple of bass. Kept pulling was freeing a big stick from my channel side board and missed what seemed like a pretty big fish. It was just that kind of morning, same thing happened while tying a knot a few points later. Did manage to pick up a 30" about 10:30. Ran out of points without having to run so called it a day about 11.
12/31 - Decided to try for some bigger baits off my light this morning. Got up at about 4:30 to give myself plenty of time. My first throw completely tangled my net. Somehow I had brail lines on the outside of the net. Have no idea what I did. Looked like a pretty good throw. Took me about 30 mins to get it untangled in the dark on a boat. Finally started making some big bait. 10" to 14" bluebacks. Made about 9 big bluebacks and 6 or 7 big ales about 10" each. Changed my bait tank water and was off to fish. Pulled up a few hundred yards short of a point and started putting out bait. Put out a big blueback and started tying a bigger hook on to accommodate my bigger bait. As I was tying the knot I clicked the free spool off the reel going out. It got blown up on immediately. Fish came back and took it. Set the hook but lost it after a few seconds. Reset the shore side boards went to set the outside and got hit as I was letting the board out. Didn't take the bait but just about took his head off so had to rebait. Hadn't even hit the first point and already lost two baits. Finally got four boards out as I got to the first point. As soon as I hit the point had a double on both inside boards which had medium ales on em. While dealing with those two, a blueback on my outside shore board was getting thrashed. By that time the board had come to a stop and I couldn't get it going again before the fish lost interest. Picked up a fish or had swirls at nearly every point I pulled. Got 7 I think before I ran out of big bait. Biggest was 32". Could have been 14. I easily missed as many as I caught. Still had a few dozen larger peanuts and medium ales so decided to double back where I had come from. These baits had been in my tank since Sunday afternoon or Monday morning and they were shined up from being in the salt that long, they were a bright silver. Brought in my channel side boards so I could just focus on the two rods, and rigged up my two lightest rigs to fish the small bait. The stripers were into the shinny bait as picked up at least 6 more. It may have been more but between rigging reeling netting I couldn't keep count but the action was constant. Finally about 2 I called it a day. What a great way to end my trip. I figured I was collecting bait for about 15 hours and fished for 21. I hope that number becomes more skewed toward fishing as I figure out what the hell in doing with bait. Great week of fishing but need to get back to work so I can get some rest. Time to sell the bass boat.
