I don't regularly fish SML and this is only my second trip. We fished the first tourney as well and regularly fish Buggs Island. I have been reading the forum for a couple of years mostly because I like reading the reports and everyone loves a Yam video for sure. I don't want to be a lurker so here goes.
Weather: 30 to upper 50's Bluebird skies winds light and variable E NE
Time: 7:00-3:30
Bait: 6-8 inch gizz
Water: 52-55 Stained
Techniques: 2 planer boards, 1 redi-rig, 1 planer bobber, and 3-4 down lines
Made it to the lake around noon on Friday with no idea where we would fish. Made a run all the way up river and just started graphing and checking water temps. Halfway up found the debris/mud line but kept going anyway. Not much bait up river and water temps colder by 5 degrees. Came back down to the mudline and went up a creek where we started marking tons of bait and fish. Dragged a few baits around Friday with no luck before heading in.Talked to some guys that had got into some surface activity and snagged a few but no location was divulged.
Woke up at 4:30 with plans to fish the same creek we tried Friday with no success hoping the bite the previous evening was just off. Headed off in the dark and about halfway up found 3 or 4 boats waiting for lines in time. Immediately started second guessing heading on up further to our location and fishing with the crowd. Figured this was probably where the fish had come up Friday. Throttled back briefly and kept going sticking with the original plan. Arrived at our creek and found one other boat already staged up, but was further in the creek and he was going in and we were planning on pulling bait out of the creek into the main body.
Started dragging baits around the creek mouth and a little ways in for an hour or so before we picked up our first fish and got the skunk off the boat, what a relief.
The morning bite lasted for a while until things died off around 10:30 or so. We whacked a few smaller fish on some down lines. Ended up catching 6 fish that morning but none over 30". We knew it would take 2 fish over 30" so we changed up and started pulling the boards along the bank into the creek hoping to snag a bruiser. Around 1:30 finally snagged a decent fish on a board and got him into the boat measured and released.
We kept pulling in the creek but never could connect with another good one. Had my dad along on this trip as well as my brother. We are already switching our annual fishing trip to Sml from here on out.
Thanks to the Striper Mafia for putting on the tournament and hopefully we can make it to the spring one. Enjoyed talking to some of the guys at the dock as much as the fishing. Look forward to getting to know some of y'all better as we can make it to the lake more often
